Former Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental Mayor Rey Yap was slain inside the Manila City Hall, attending a court hearing at RTC Branch 19 last Tuesday, January 29. He sustained 5 gunshot wounds from the gunman dressed as a police officer.
The fact that it happend inside a Government Property, the City Hall is a slap in the face of the City Government of Manila, especially to Mayor Alfredo Lim, known to be the bad-ass “Dirty Harry” of Manila back when he governed the City before Former Mayor Lito Atienza replaced him.
They say it was lack of security, yes it is. But why the hell would be a government building lacks security? I’ve been inside the City Hall way back in college for research. Yes there are many people, understandable because it is a government office, but it remains to say that added security is needed since it is known here that being a government official is not that popular to some. Maybe they are trying to be like the mall near the City Hall, anybody can enter and exit the building… Just a thought.
The employees of the RTC inside the City Hall says it is better that they have their own Hall of Justice, they are more “secure” if they have their own place.
Again, not 100% sure to be true.
A couple of months back, at the Taguig City Hall of Justice, a man and his girlfriend held 4 person hostage inside RTC Court Branch 226 for 24 hours because of the slow pace of his trial. The Hall of Justice is right across the NCRPO headquarters, home of the PNP command for Metro Manila. To hell with that?!
Asking why Manila doesn’t have it’s own Hall of Justice? Well basically the construction already started, and halted because of financial problems. The proposed Hall of Justice is located near Adamson University, where the old Jai-Alai Building used to be, it was demolished during the reign of Mayor Atienza, one of the stories at that moment.
So whether or not the City has the necessary facilities for them to use, it is still not the solution. Maybe beefed up the security and let the taxpayer’s money go where it should be.
